"I am committed to providing the full resources of the state to support the response and recovery effort."
Despite the devastation, the spirit of the Greenfield community remains unbroken. "We're a small community, we're a tough community... we will rebuild this community together," said Donnell Griffith, a local resident whose husband owns Griff's Garage, one of the structures leveled by the tornado.
A mandatory curfew has been established from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday, and likely for several days to come, to ensure safety and aid in search and rescue operations. A reunification point has been set up at Nodaway Valley High School, which will also serve as a temporary shelter for displaced residents.
The Adair County Health System hospital in Greenfield was also damaged. Mercy One spokesman Todd Mizener assured that efforts are underway to ensure the well-being of their colleagues and the community.
In response to the disaster, Governor Reynolds has authorized a disaster proclamation for 15 counties, including Adair, enabling the activation of the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program and the Disaster Case Advocacy Program. State and local officials are working tirelessly to assess the situation, set up temporary shelters, and restore utilities.
